The Thing Around Your Neck
Risoprint and laser print on uncoated paper, Soft cover, 2024
Risoprinted at Artez University of the Arts, Arnhem, NLDesigning a typographical expression of an existing book written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi. This project was a collaboration with Amber Zara van den Pangaard and Chaeyoung Lim to show the struggles of the author as she shares her migration story in the U.S. The cover represents a letter from the Immigration Office emphasizing on the importance of receiving the ‘green card’ to live abroad. Throughout the book, there are specific phrases emboldened and chapters that are risoprinted with a green gradient. This was a choice to shine a light on those chapters that shares issues on what it means to recieve a green card, being sexualised as a foreign woman and the struggles to maintain financial and legal stabilility within the country. In the end of the book contains an American Index where the reader can look through the emboldened words that are related to America – the visa process, American products, Locations, Universities, etc.

A typography assignment with limitations (archive content, size, binding). Content is taken from ‘The Wire’ magazine which consist of articles that talks about music and different artists. The magazine focuses more on the location of different artists all around the world and used the coordinates for page numbers. It is inspired by an LP Vinyl cover and each page has a silver circle that mimics the movement of sliding the vinyl in and out of the cover. There are two ways to read it. One is a quick read that consists of the artist’ discographies and when you flip it, you can read the longer articles.
